Welcome to Mavis of Bushey, a locally-owned yarn and needlecraft retailer that has been serving the community for over 90 years.

We are proud to offer an extensive selection of high-quality needlework supplies, including knitting and crochet yarns, threads, embroidery kits, patterns, haberdashery, fabrics and more. All of our selection is available online.

History of Mavis

'Mavis' was originally established in November 1935 by Mavis Conquest, and described as a wool and art needlework shop. When Mavis retired the shop was run by her son Michael, and his wife Pam until their retirement in March 2021. The shop was then taken over by a new owner, long time Bushey resident Sarah Waite.

Sarah was delighted to have the opportunity to continue the Mavis tradition in Bushey. On taking over Sarah introduced a new online store to give new customers from further afield the opportunity to benefit from Mavis' experience and service. Sarah also introduced knitting and crochet lessons, and new lines such as fabric and craft related gifts.

Changing consumer habits and rapidly rising costs of operating a physical shop meant that in March 2026 the shop in Bushey High Street closed and Mavis became an Online Only retailer.

Our website has grown considerably over the past five years since it was established. It now has the full range of products that were in the shop, and it has helpful tools that makes it easy for customers to select and buy the yarn to go with their chosen pattern. 

Mavis has regularly changed with the times since 1935 and the move to being an exclusively online retailer is just another of those changes that has enabled the business to remain successful. Although no longer physically on the High Street we are still closely connected to the local community in many ways, and via our website we can reach many more customers.
